GHANA CELEBRATES 61ST ANNIVERSARY

Ghana, yesterday, marked its 61st Independence Anniversary with a parade of security personnel and school children in Accra. The theme for this year's celebration was "Ghana Beyond Aid".

The occasion was graced by His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as Special Guest of Honour.

Also present were the two former Presidents of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufour, former Vice President, Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Prof Mike Oquaye, members of the Council of State, the clergy and traditional leaders.

In an address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the common goal of building a prosperous nation with her own resources rather than with foreign aid.

President Akufo-Addo attributed the economic misfortunes of the country to mismanagement and corruption, leading to high fiscal deficits financed through borrowing and foreign aid.

He said for a rapid economic and social transformation, Ghana's resources would have to be efficiently harnessed and creatively, and efficiently deployed- a task, he said, required hard work, enterprise, creativity and consistent fight against corruption in public life as well as a break from the mentality of dependence, and the adoption of a can-do spirit followed by love for country.

The President said he did not intend to live on past memories and that it was now the turn of the present generation to build on those past glories.

President Akufo-Addo reminded Ghanaians of the country's status as the Black Star of Africa, but expressed regrets that the country had largely underperformed, despite chatting the path for other oppressed nations on the continent to gain independence.

He, therefore, urged Ghanaians to rise above mediocrity and strive to ensure substantial progress for Ghana in future.
