President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday affirmed his government’s commitment to reviving the railway sector to enable it to play its role in the socio-economic development of the country.

The President said the railway sector, when revamped, would be one of the key drivers to the transformation of the country's economy.

President Akufo-Addo said this when he inspected works on the Accra railway construction on the second day of his three-day tour of the Greater Accra Region.

Addressing a gathering which met him on his arrival at Kantamanto in the Central Business District of Accra, President Akufo-Addo said one of the tragedies of Ghana's post-colonial development, has been the country's inability to invest in the railway sector.

"One of the legacies I want to leave is a modern railway network from Accra to Paga with interconnectivity with Burkina Faso" the President stated.

The Minister of Railway Development, Mr Joe Ghartey said the President's vision and commitment to transforming the Railway sector had received much attention from foreign investors.

He said the construction of Accra-Kumasi railway network, would commerce in the first quarter of 2019.

Mr Ghartey was optimistic that the Ghana Railway Authority would become one of the profitable ventures in 2019, promising that rehabilitation works on the Takoradi - Nsuta-Twakwa railway lines would also commence next year.
